You Can Be A Real Mystery Shopper

Kernersville, NC -- "Do not. Do not fall for these scammers," says the mystery shopper. She should know because she is a real mystery shopper. That's why we disguised her identity.

She got an official looking offer in the mail with a check. The check is fake.

"Let me just say that a legitimate secret shopping company will never just send you a check."

Here's how the scam works. You deposit the check in your account to test the Western Union wire service. The check will appear to clear your bank. But after you wire the money, you're out the full amount when the check comes back.

"If someone asks you to give them money for any reason, would you just go to your purse and give them money?"

Mystery shopping is a real business. You just have to know what to look for.

"A legitimate mystery shopping company never charges you to work for them."

Our shopper uses the Mystery Shopping Providers Association. She can search jobs and even have them e-mailed to her automatically.

"How I get my shops is they e-mail me and say hey do you want to accept the shop. And then they pay me for it after I turn in a report."

Usually the shopper gets reimbursed the cost of the product and a little something extra for your time.

But our secret shopper wants you to remember the most important key, "Never, ever pay to mystery shop. If you are paying to mystery shop, you are being scammed."
