The biggest ever single day gain

On a closing basis, Sensexs biggest single day point gain of 788.85 points, or 4.51%, to 18,280.24, came on 9 October 2007, when worries of an early election eased.

Todays rally was due to easing worries about the US credit after several top US executives reassured investors that the US banking system can withstand shocks from credit-related losses.

The BSE Mid-Cap index rose 2.10% to 8,284.49 while the BSE Small-Cap index gained 2.42% to 10,038.16
All the sectoral indices on BSE posted gains. BSE Auto Index (up 2.26% at 5,252.49), BSE Consumer Durables index (up 0.60% to 5,161.61), BSE PSU index (up 4.06% to 10,537.06), Bankex (up 5.94% to 11,163.78), BSE Health Care Index (up 1.74% at 3,915.74), BSE IT Index (up 4.74% at 4,289.96), and BSE TecK index (up 3.85% to 3,673.43), BSE FMCG Index (up 1.47% at 2,099.15), BSE Capital Goods Index (up 2.79% at 20,859.52), BSE BSE Realty (up 3.24% to 10,322.33), BSE Oil and Gas Index (up 6.03% at 12,096.81), and BSE Metal Index (up 3.85% at 17,703.70), all posted gains.
Reliance Industries surged 6.94% to Rs 2884 on 19.03 lakh shares. Oil & Natural Gas Corporation surged 3.87% to Rs 1229.05. Infosys Technologies gained 4.33% to Rs 1698. ICICI Bank vaulted 10.53% to Rs 1300. Bharat Heavy Electricals jumped 3.35% to Rs 2870.
