HOW TO LOOK FOR MYSTERY SHOPPING JOBS

Here's how to find legitimate mystery shopping opportunities:

• The Mystery Shopping Providers Association, www.mysteryshop.org, provides a clearinghouse of all of its members and some available jobs. Not all members post all of their jobs, so you might have to individually sign up with members to get onto their database of available jobs.

• Stay away from offers that ask you for money up front to become a certified shopper or to get jobs. Most legitimate mystery shopping firms will require that you spend the money first during an assignment -- for a meal or for a product. Then you'll get reimbursed, but they will not require that you pay them to get an assignment.

• Do some homework. There are some bulletin boards, such as www.volition.com, where mystery shoppers share their experiences about mystery shopping firms. If you're going with a company that might not be a member of the Mystery Shopping Providers Association, like Corporate Research International, a check of the Better Business Bureau and some shopping bulletin boards will help confirm whether they're legitimate. Corporate Research International, www.mysteryshops.com, was a member of the industry group but has chosen not to be a member at this time, company officials said.
